Objective: The objective of this assignment is to delve into the historical evolution of

the competencies required in today’s dynamic business environment. Be sure to provide clear
discussions, with connection to course content, provide examples, and analysis and perceptions.
Instructions:
I. Assess Historical Theories on Management:
a. Research and identify at least two significant historical management theories or
approaches (e.g., classical, behavioral, contingency).
b. For each theory, provide a brief overview, including its key principles, proponents, and
contributions to the field of management.
c. Critically analyze the relevance and applicability of each theory in modern
organizational settings. Consider factors such as technological advancements,
globalization, and changing workforce dynamics. Consider how they would or would not
work within today’s workforce.
II. Understanding the Evolution of Management:
a. Define what management means from a historical perspective. How has the concept of
management evolved?
b. Discuss the fundamental functions of management as proposed by early theorists (e.g.,
planning, organizing, leading, controlling).
c. Explore how the understanding of management has transformed to encompass broader
aspects such as strategic leadership, organizational culture, and innovation management.
III. Competencies for Today’s Business Environment – Current Events:
a.Identify and discuss the key competencies that managers need to succeed in today’s
rapidly changing business landscape.
b. Analyze the importance of competencies such as adaptability, emotional intelligence,
cross-cultural communication, and digital literacy.
c. Provide real-world examples demonstrating the application of these competencies in
various industries and organizational contexts – good or bad.

Bloomberg.com, Economist.com, or Business Insider to find examples of
management techniques or activities as they relate to material in Chapters
1-3.
