Using the article provided on the course website as a starting point, you will look for 4-6 additional articles and resources that further describe this model of talk about text. You should focus primarily on peer-reviewed journals and research articles.
You will then write a paper (approximately 8 pages) that focuses on the model that you have selected and that describes and analyzes the model in detail. Please review an example of the final paper.
The paper should include the following components:
1. Why is this important?
Begin with a brief introduction or overview of either the role of teacher talk in student learning or the importance of discussion/classroom talk as a tool for promoting student learning. Think of this as a rationale for why we need to investigate models for improving teacher talk and supporting students’ productive talk-based interactions in the classroom. Where does this model fit within the larger picture of classroom Discourse?
2. What is the evidence? A summary of each article that includes important ideas and/or major findings (in the case of research articles)
3. What can you conclude? A synthesis of “big ideas” presented across these articles
4. How does it work? A comprehensive description and analysis of this model that addresses the following questions:
What are its essential principles?
What are the affordances and challenges of this model?
How does talk play a part?
What role do texts play (if any) in this model?
What is the teacher’s role?
What is the nature of student interactions within this model?
5. Connections to other readings from this course (references to other articles read in class should be in addition to the 4-6 articles you locate for this review)
6. Conclusion that includes implications for classroom practice
(Topic Chosen: Collaborative Strategic Reading:)

Final paper grading criteria:
Validity of Introduction/Rationale
Relevance and scope of bibliography
Clarity and relevance of synthesis of “big ideas”
Quality of analysis
Integration with course readings, discussions, and principles distilled throughout the semester
Clarity of ideas
Overall organization
Validity of the implications
Few mechanical or grammatical errors
