How are barriers to mental health similar to barriers to physical health? What’s the difference between a barrier and a challenge to treatment?
Whether it’s financial concerns, physical limitations, or other factors, barriers to mental health care take diverse forms and vary by individual. Mental health professionals should recognize this complexity and consider the broad set of influences on clients, including cultural perspectives, stigma, personal biases, physical ability, the hierarchy of needs, and beyond. Each individual’s barriers are unique, so counselors should aim to inform their practice by understanding and addressing these factors to enhance outcomes for each individual.

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
- Identify a barrier to mental health care. Support with a personal or observed example.
- Describe the identified barrier. Support by addressing how the barrier could affect treatment and why mitigating the barrier is important.
- Discuss mitigation strategies that could be employed to help an individual experiencing the identified barrier.
- Discuss an ethical principle to consider while counseling an individual experiencing the identified barrier.
