- Plan and present research findings in a clear and coherent manner accurately citing a range of sources using appropriate academic conventions
XS6008 Purpose:
The aim of this assignment is to enable students to critically engage with examples of qualitative research design and methodology as found in the literature. They are to apply their understanding of issues in design, methodology and of research quality criteria to a critical assessment of a published, empirical qualitative research paper.
XS6008 Description:
- Begin your assessment with an introduction to contextualise your critique through critical evaluation of the place of qualitative research in relation to strategies in business research.
- Identify 1 qualitative research paper from a high quality journal (Consult your supervisor for advice on appropriate papers if necessary.) The paper must be an empirical paper – one that generates primary or fresh data through research practice – and must make use of qualitative methods (not quantitative methods). You must provide a justification for your selection.
- You are to examine and critically evaluate the paper and prepare a critique of it that gives special emphasis to the literature review, methodology used for the studies and research results.
- Before you critique the papers, it is suggested that you consider what quality criteria are relevant and that you will employ to conduct the analysis and critique. You should include a short section that outlines that consideration and establishes the criteria. The authors of the article may, of course, address quality criteria themselves.
Your qualitative research report should be based on the following two criteria:
A) You are required to summarise one article based on international business. Your report could consist of the following for section A:
- An introduction to your topic
- A background to the topic
- Presentation of the article (Employ CRAAP Test)
B) For section B your report should be able to use key information from your notes to present the suggested headings below for the final section of your report:
- A summary of key findings from the article
- A critical analysis that includes research purpose, literature review, methodology and results (This is not an exhaustive list)
- A conclusion
*Other sources can be used within the whole report but should demonstrate an understanding of the chosen academic article you have been able to present information for.
5. It is vital that you critically evaluate and assess how well the article applies and reports the method. A critique is not simply a summary of the article.
