Assignment 1 Question The rapid growth of e-commerce, automation, and digital technologies has transformed warehousing and logistics operations. While these developments have improved efficiency and productivity, they have also introduced new health and safety challenges associated with automation, vehicle movements, manual handling, human-machine interaction, and workplace wellbeing. As a result, organisations are increasingly reviewing their approaches to risk management to ensure that safety performance is maintained while supporting operational growth.

You have recently joined a large distribution and logistics company as the Health and Safety Manager. The organisation operates a 24-hour warehouse and distribution centre that serves retail and commercial customers nationwide. The company employs approximately 150 staff and uses a combination of automated equipment, warehouse management software, forklift trucks, manual handling activities, and digital monitoring systems.

The company has experienced an increase in near-miss incidents, staff turnover, and operational disruptions over the last three years. Senior management is preparing a business improvement proposal and has asked you to write an article (in the form of a report) to support investment in enhanced health and safety management.

Your report should evaluate and discuss at least the following:

An evaluation of the deductive and inductive hazard identification techniques that may be used within the warehousing and logistics sector. A discussion of the business and quality implications of effective risk management within warehousing and logistics operations. An evaluation of innovative risk control measures, including risk-benefit analysis, that could improve health and safety performance within the organisation. The company has operated for several years with limited profitability. Following operating expenses, staffing costs, maintenance expenditures, insurance, and costs associated with health and safety incidents, the organisation typically retains approximately £60,000 annually for investment and improvement activities.

Drawing upon relevant literature, legislation, standards, professional guidance, and good practice, critically discuss how the organisation can improve its health and safety performance while maintaining operational efficiency and financial sustainability.

You may make reasonable assumptions where necessary, but these must be clearly stated and justified.

Your critical discussion should be in the form of a 1200-word report. It is not sufficient to simply describe the concepts. You need to include a range of research, guidance, and standards to support your critical discussion and conclusion.

General Instruction You should research a range of reference materials including recent published research relating to the topic you are discussing. Journal articles on research can be found through the portal in the e-library using science direct, for guidance on accessing journals and eBooks online please refer to the accessing electronic resources guide on Moodle.
