In answering the questions, be sure to give the novel’s title (underlined or italicized) and the author’s full name. If you use the author’s name, remember the correct style is to use the author’s full name the first time you mention it and then the last name only.

2. How does the narrator’s attitude and behavior change over the course of the novel? Trace the changes in her attitudes, behaviors, and actions by discussing them in an essay. In other words, highlight how she develops in each section of the book (first look at chapters 1–7, then 8–16, and finally 17–27). Give specific chapter and page numbers. As you highlight her attitudes, behaviors, and actions, show how she progresses as a character.
3. In your own words describe the novel’s setting. First describe the boathouse and seacoast area. Then describe Manderley’s exterior and interior.
4. A main character in any drama, including our own life, is someone who has a great influence on people and the events of the time. Who do you think is the main character in Rebecca? Provide evidence from the story as you explain why you chose that person.
5. After reading the book and thinking about violence, how do you evaluate violence? Why did Maxim chose violence? What alternatives did he have? What does Colonel Julyan think about Maxim’s guilt? In what ways was Rebecca a cruel person? In what ways does good triumph over evil? Give specific examples and page numbers
6. Suggest music to use during major plot development. Give the song title, composer, and lyricist and discuss why this piece should be used where you want to use it. What does it do for the story line? How does it help the reader?
