ULMS576 RESIT, Individual Recorded Presentation Assignment Brief 2026

Assessment Task

You should choose one UK high-street food or coffee brand such as Greggs, Pret A Manger, Costa Coffee, Caffè Nero, Starbucks UK, Leon, Subway UK, or another appropriate food or coffee brand operating in the UK market. Your task is to use secondary data only to identify a clear marketing opportunity or challenge facing your chosen brand and develop practical, evidence-based recommendations for its marketing strategy.

You may focus on one of the following areas:

•    attracting Gen Z or student consumers

•    responding to cost-of-living pressures

•    improving perceptions of value for money

•    increasing loyalty or repeat purchase

•    strengthening sustainability or ethical positioning

•    improving digital engagement, app use, or delivery-platform visibility

•    adapting to changing food, drink, health, or convenience trends

Important Assignment Requirements

This is an individual resit assessment. You must demonstrate your own ability to identify a marketing problem, interpret secondary data, generate actionable insights, apply relevant marketing research concepts or frameworks, and communicate a clear data-supported recommendation in a professional recorded presentation.

As this is an individual resit of a group presentation, the teamwork element of the original assessment is reassessed through an individual demonstration of applied evaluative judgement, decision-making, and reflection on how the recommendation would be implemented in practice.

You must submit a recorded presentation with visible slides and spoken narration/audio. This means that you must record yourself presenting your slides. You may do this using PowerPoint narration, Panopto, MS Teams, or another suitable recording method. Submitting slides only is not enough. If you submit slides without a playable audio narration, this will not count as a recorded presentation, and you will fail this assessment.

Your recording must be no longer than 5 minutes, and you must not collect primary data. You must not contact the chosen brand, its employees, customers, competitors, or members of the public.

Your presentation must clearly demonstrate how you have applied the marketing research process taught on the module. This means that you should:

  1. Define the marketing problem or opportunity facing your chosen brand.
  2. Set one clear research objective or research question that guides your investigation.
  3. Identify and justify the secondary data sources used to address the problem or opportunity. You should briefly comment on the relevance, credibility, and limitations of the data.
  4. Analyse the secondary data to generate consumer, market, competitor, or trend insights. You should not simply describe facts or statistics; you must explain what the evidence means for the brand.
  5. Translate the insights into practical marketing recommendations that are clearly supported by the data.
  6. Communicate the findings clearly through visualisation and storytelling, using appropriate charts, figures, tables, or other visuals where relevant.
  7. Where relevant, briefly acknowledge any important ethical, social, cultural, or environmental implication of your recommendation.

Presentation Content

Your recorded presentation should address the following areas:

1. Brand and Market Challenge: Briefly introduce your chosen brand and explain the marketing challenge or opportunity facing the brand.

  1. Research Objective: Provide a clear research objective or research question that guides your investigation. For example:
  • How can Costa Coffee improve loyalty among student consumers?
  • How can Greggs respond to cost-of-living pressures while maintaining brand value
  • How can Pret A Manger improve perceptions of value for money among young professionals?

3.    Secondary Data Insights: Use secondary data to present 2 key insights. These may relate to consumer behaviour, market trends, competitor activity, audience segments, pricing, digital engagement, sustainability, or customer experience. Suitable sources may include Mintel, Statista, Euromonitor, IBISWorld, ONS, company reports, trade press, credible news sources, academic literature, and other relevant databases or industry sources. You should briefly explain what the evidence means for your chosen brand. Do not simply describe statistics.

4.    Target Audience: Clearly identify the target audience for your recommendation and explain why this audience is relevant, using secondary data where possible.

5.    Strategic Recommendations: Provide clear recommendations for the marketing strategy of the brand. This may relate to positioning, product or service adaptation, pricing, promotion, customer loyalty, digital engagement, sustainability, customer experience, or any other relevant strategic area. Your recommendation must be clearly linked to your secondary data insights.

6.    Implementation Idea: Briefly explain how the recommendations could be implemented in practice (i.e., explain what the brand should do and why). This may include campaign ideas, communication channels, customer touchpoints, digital tools, loyalty activity, in-store experience, partnerships, or delivery-platform activity.

Suggested Presentation Structure and Guidelines
You are advised to use approximately 5-6 slides, excluding references and any GenAI use log. A suitable structure would be:

•    Slide 3: Key secondary data insights
•    Slide 4: Target audience and applied framework
•    Slide 5: Strategic recommendation
•    Slide 6: Implementation idea
•    Final slide: References
•    Appendix/final slide if applicable: GenAI use log

Submission
You must upload your recorded presentation by: Monday, 3rd August 2026, at 12:00 PM. The recorded presentation must include both the slides and your spoken narration/audio. You do not need to submit the slides separately. Please follow the submission requirements below:
