(SLO 3: Discuss two works in an essay accounting for the similarities and differences; and, SLO 4: Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which art has been employed throughout history to express individual and cultural ideals and beliefs).

Assignment Introduction and Instructions:
We’ve been seeing an increase in the depiction of different strata of societies, ranging from the very poor/oppressed, to the the middle class with increasing leisure time and disposable income, to the very wealthy.
This assignment will test your understanding of this variety of people in artworks and what impact artists, art historical styles, cultures, and regions had on art. Is the goal always about exposing social inequities, for instance?
Written Assignment:
You are to write an essay comparing and contrasting two works of art made by during the 19th century accounting for both their similarities and differences. These artworks must be from our current Unit 5, Realism, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism.
First, pick one artwork that depicts a person or people who are struggling and/or poor.
Second, pick another one that shows a person or people who appear wealthier and privileged.
After including all that is expected in an art historical essay (artists, titles, dates, region/country, styles, medium, and subject), write a compare and contrast essay. Keep the following in mind:
You must analyze the subjects but also why these works of art are representative of their respective art movement(s).
Your essay should be a minimum of 500 words, essay format and proofread; typed double-spaced, in a 12-point font.
