Essay prompts:
The field of Chicana and Latina studies is deeply rooted in activist traditions. This has included linking the work happening in classrooms and through education to the diverse struggles of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color groups. Reflecting on what you have learned in this course, what are some strategies that lead to social change? Focus on a specific activist group in your analysis and consider how these strategies relate to your own life or the things you have witnessed around you.
Intersectionality plays a key role in shaping people’s identities and experiences, especially among Chicana and Latina social movements. For this essay, select an advocacy campaign or a social movement organization that is focused on Chicana or Latina communities. Clearly identify the issue and its goals, and then use an intersectional framework to show the complexity of that issue based on two (or more) identity categories. This could include, but is not limited to, gender, sexuality, Indigeneity, immigration status, ability, age, or religion.
Choose a particular Chicana or Latina cultural production (e.g., a film, TV show, music video, or artwork) that you believe exemplifies the themes and concepts covered in this course. Analyze how the production engages with issues of race, gender, and intersectionality, and evaluate its effectiveness in promoting social justice and equity. How do Chicana and Latina cultural productions challenge dominant narratives and promote alternative visions of the world? How do intersecting systems of power and oppression shape representation and cultural meaning-making in Chicana and Latina cultural productions? What role do cultural productions play in struggles for social justice and liberation?
