According to the article, it is natural for adolescents to experience a range of emotions after the loss of a parent. adolescence is already a time of great upheaval and change, and the loss of a parent can add an extra layer of complexity. Grief, uncertainty, anxiety, and guilt are all common reactions in this situation. While it is normal for adolescents to feel these things, it is important to be aware that the loss of a parent can also have a significant impact on their mental health. Adolescents who have lost a parent are at increased risk for developing depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They may also struggle with substance abuse issues or self-harm.
From the article, the loss of a parent may have an impact on many parts of an adolescent’s life, generating grief-like behaviors. Unfavorable effects on physical, psychological, and behavioral states, as well as negative effects on their home and school life, are among these ranges (Feigelman et al., 2017). The major symptoms observed were the emergence of mood disorders and increased suicidal ideations, as well as anxiety, sleeplessness, addictions, and elevated mental health risks. Adolescent grieving influences several facets of an adolescent’s social life, most notably their academic achievement and peer connections.
From the article, a total of forty articles were reviewed in the literature review. The focus of the articles was adolescence i.e., the effects on adolescent’s mental health after the loss of a parent. The findings showed that the loss of a parent has multiple detrimental repercussions on an adolescent’s mental health. Future investigations on the long-term impacts of teenage mental health as a result of losing a parent during the coronavirus 2019 pandemic were also advocated in this dissertation.
