1. The Other. From the time of the arrival of the Europeans to the North American continent through the beginning of the 18th century colonization brought together people of disparate backgrounds. The day to say of life in the colonies was marked by race, class, and gender. Using only the readings assigned in this class describe the experience of these “others” in the early colonial period.
How did non-elite actors fare in the evolution of the British and/or French colonies from the 1530s through 1700?
2. Geopolitics. For the course of the semester, we have noted how geopolitics have informed the colonial process. England, France, and Spain were engaged in a rivalry for dominance on the European continent that extended into the Americas. Specifically, for us, these events greatly informed the formation of the 13 British colonies in North America and
influenced their development to 1700.
How did geopolitics come to inform the colonial project from the period of exploration through 1700?
