N 490 Module 1 Assignment: Building the Profession of Nursing

APA Nursing Paper

Nursing has a long and varied history, dating back to ancient civilizations. In fact, evidence suggests that nursing was practiced as early as 3100 BC in ancient Egypt (Egenes, 2017). Nurses provided both medical care and emotional support to patients, and were often responsible for tending to the sick and injured during times of war. Throughout history, nurses have played a vital role in both healthcare and society as a whole. They have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of healthcare for all people, regardless of social status or income level. And they continue to do so today. Nursing is an incredibly important profession, and the nurses who dedicate their lives to it are true heroes. The purpose of this paper is to explore different aspects of nursing including historical topics/events, professional nursing organizations, and the current issues encountered by the professionals in this occupation.

History of Nursing

Nursing has a long and rich history that is often overshadowed by the more prominent male-dominated medical professions. Nevertheless, women have been nurses since ancient times and have made significant contributions to the development of the nursing field. The modern concept of nursing was first introduced in the early 19th century by Florence Nightingale (Egenes, 2017). Nightingale believed that nursing should be a profession for women and that nurses should be highly trained and educated. She also emphasized the importance of preventive care and advocated for better working conditions for nurses (Egenes, 2017). Her work laid the foundation for modern nursing practices and helped to elevate the status of nurses in society.

Events/Topics from History Related to Nursing

There have been many significant events in the history of nursing. Here are two that have had a major impact on the profession: -The emergence of nursing as a distinct profession during the Crimean War (1853-1856). Prior to this conflict, nurses were largely uneducated and untrained, and their work was not highly respected. However, the immense number of casualties during the war placed great strain on the medical system, and nurses proved invaluable in providing care for the sick and wounded soldiers. This helped to raise the standing of nurses in society, and laid the foundation for professional nurse training programs. Many historians believe that the nursing profession began to take shape during the Crimean War, which took place from 1853 to 1856. This was a time when Rudolph Virchow and Florence Nightingale both made major contributions to the field of nursing, and it was also when hospitals began to be established specifically for the treatment of soldiers. While the Crimean War was a significant turning point for nursing, it was not until much later that the profession truly became established.

The Crimean War (1853-1856) is considered an important milestone in the development of nursing as a distinct profession (Egenes, 2017). Florence Nightingale, often referred to as the “founder of modern nursing”, was a nurse who worked during the war. She is credited with helping to improve the sanitary conditions in military hospitals, and with raising awareness about the importance of nurses’ work. Her efforts during Crimean War helped to establish nursing as a respected and essential profession.

Another historical event was in 1899, when a group of pioneering nurses established the American Nurses Association (ANA). The association is considered to be one of the oldest professional organizations for nurses in the United States. The ANA was formed to improve the quality of nursing care and to advance the profession of nursing through advocacy, education, and research (Egenes, 2017). Today, one of the most important roles of the ANA is to provide a unified voice for nurses on issues affecting patient care and the nursing profession. The ANA also works to promote high standards of nursing practice and ethical conduct among nurses, and to protect the rights of patients and nurses.

The establishment of the American Nurses Association (ANA) in 1899 was a critically important development in the history of nursing and the nursing as a profession (Egenes, 2017). Prior to ANA, there was no national professional organization for nurses in the United States. This meant that nurses lacked a unified voice when advocating for better working conditions, pay, and education. ANA changed all that by bringing nurses together under one banner and giving them a powerful platform from which to speak out on behalf of their profession (Egenes, 2017). Today, ANA continues to play a vital role in supporting and advancing the nursing profession. Through its many initiatives and programs, ANA works to improve patient care, increase access to quality healthcare, promote professional development and education, and strengthen the nursing workforce.

Professional Nursing Organizations

There are a number of professional nursing organizations in the USA, each with their own focus and area of expertise. Here are two of the most well-known:

They also work to ensure that nurses are updated on the latest changes in the profession and maintain their certification. Additionally, professional nursing organizations offer networking opportunities and support systems for nurses (Morse et al., 2022). Lastly, these organizations can be a valuable resource for employers when searching for qualified nurses. Professional nursing organizations provide a variety of networking opportunities for their members. These may include online forums, local chapter meetups, national conferences, and more. Nurses often find networking opportunities to be valuable for a number of reasons. They can provide support and mentorship, offer new career opportunities, and help nurses stay up-to-date on the latest industry news. Professional nursing organizations are an excellent resource for nurses looking to connect with other professionals in their field.

Intro is followed by a Level 1 subheading (bold and centered) for the first half of the assignment. This week it’s Nursing Past Related to Current Profession. Any question/point you are addressing under this heading should be marked clearly with Level 2 subheading which are bolded and flush left.

Immediately after the first section above without any spaces, you will also use another Level 1 subheading (bold and centered) prior to the second half of the assignment which is the case study. This week it’s Professional Nursing Organizations. Again, differentiate which question/point you are answering by using a Level 2 subheading (bold and at the left margin).

After both sections are discussed at length – there will be ONE Conclusion – needed for all papers as the last Level 1 subheading bold and centered that summarizes the entire paper/knowledge gained

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Discussion and Assignments: Please pay attention to the following requirements to not lose points:

Number of words required

Number of references required, when applicable

Number of replies required to your classmates (for discussions)

A note on your APA assignments:

Every paper needs a title page

Every paper needs a reference page started on its own page, in hanging paragraph format

Every paper needs to be written in APA format, remembering these basics:

1 inch margins

Double-spaced

References in APA format and proper in-text citations

When in doubt, combine assignments into one paper with one title page and one reference page.

For my classes I do not require a table of contents or an abstract.

A note on your APA PowerPoints:

The title slide needs your name and credentials, the class, the date, the title, and my name: Just like the title page of a paper.

The reference list and the citations in the presentation need to be match up, just like in a paper. This is done by putting the citation on the slide where it is used, on the bottom right of the slide, in parenthesis.

The reference list needs to be in APA format: Either in hanging paragraph format or with bullet points.

Graphics are allowed, but a slide with a graphic will NOT count towards your slide count.

MULTIMEDIA are required, and worth 30 points of your PowerPoint.

IMPORTANT! The content needs to be substantial. No, you should not overwhelm a slide with words, but spreading out a list of 4 bullet points to 4 different slides in not acceptable either.

Due dates

Initial postings to the discussion boards are due on Thursday at midnight pacific time. Responses to classmates for both discussions are due on Sunday at midnight pacific time. Assignments are due Monday at midnight pacific time. New modules will open every Tuesday.
