NURS 4220 WK 6: QUALITY IMPROVEMENT STORYBOARD

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT STORYBOARD

The staff nurse’s role in health care organizations is one of the most critical. High-performing healthcare organizations, in my experience, have good communication skills between nurses, doctors, and administration or management. I am most familiar with smaller practices, so fewer corporate protocols and rules are in place. A smaller office allows for a quick change in policies and procedures and open communication with good working relationships between all staff members.

The organizational culture of my healthcare organization represents shared ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving (Mannion, 2018). Culture in an environment can either make or break quality patient care. Cultivating an atmosphere amongst the staff that is negative and not positively fixing problems will create a high turnover rate of critical staff members. Setting clear communication patterns and having protocols to add suggestions to make workflow more efficient will also cultivate a desirable culture and an environment people want to work in. The CEO and CNO in my organization use a transformational leadership method. This method practiced by our organization is when the leaders and followers motivate each other to benefit good patient outcomes (Collins, 2020). Mutual respect between staff nurses and the CEO/MD creates workplace balance and a positive environment where people enjoy coming to work.

I use senior leadership to support changes that improve patient safety by staying involved in daily patient care. It’s essential that communication between the surgeon and staff takes place at the beginning of every workday to ensure the day runs smoothly and that the cases for the day are briefly discussed. It also gives us time for chart reviews, so we know what to expect for the day. The days that are the most stressful and the days the staff is ill-prepared for the patient cases of the day. Since I have been with the surgeon for years, I know when the proper time to talk to him usually is having specific situations to use as examples is how we communicate our needs for change in protocol for better outcomes. I also allow the staff to give feedback often, as creating environments where people aren’t allowed to voice their opinion is a recipe for disaster.
