Why is this task important for my learning? The purpose of learning about various physiological frameworks and theories is to enable you to consider client behaviour from multiple angels. This includes probing behind their words and deeds to understand what is happening to them as a person. However, in order to achieve this at a professional level of competence it is necessary that you are self-aware of how your life have been shaped by external and internal factors. You cannot guide others on a path of self-discovery if you have not travelled it yourself. This task allows learners to demonstrate their understanding of various psychological theories and their growing confidence in applying those theories to themselves. It requires the novice practitioner to use reflective skills informed by theoretical knowledge. And, it requires the capacity to communicate abstract thoughts through concrete stories. Standing alongside others as they go through difficult times, requires humility and honesty. As a matter of personal integrity, you cannot create a false sense of your own perfection. Clients are unlikely to be honest if they feel you are aloof from them. So, some level of personal disclosure is necessary in order to build a “working alliance” with the client. However, personal disclosure should never cross the boundaries of your professional relationship. Success in this type of assessment demonstrates acquisition of key skills and character required of human services practitioners.
This task requires you to demonstrate two of our four learning outcomes:
• SLO2 Informed by various psychological theories presented in this unit, identify and initially assess the potential impact of psychological issues affecting clients within Human Services context. • SLO3 Use self-reflection skills to identify potential psychological influences upon your reactions and decisions when dealing with Human Services clients.
