Students are required to write a 5-page term paper in which they critically analyze The Undocumented Americans. Essays must be typed, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, justified alignment, and double-spaced. The final paper is due on May 19, 2024. Term papers are worth 20% of your grade. Below are some questions students should answer in their assignments:
1. Briefly describe the author’s personal background. What policies did New York voters consider in the 1980’s & 1990’s that impacted the Latinx & immigrant populations? What is Arizona SB 1070? Be sure to discuss the interview subjects from Chapter 1.
2. What is the 9/11 Health & Compensation Act & how did it affect Latinx laborers? Analyze the role of Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) & the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) according to the author. What policy was passed by Gov. George Pataki (pg. 41)? Explain the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund in the context of the Latinx population of New York. Be sure to discuss the interview subjects from Chapter 2.
3. What does the author say about the potential effects of attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act on the Latinx residents of Miami (pg.61)? Discuss the forms of alternative medicines the author’s interview subjects rely on. Explain Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Critically analyze the Cuban Adjustment Act (1966).
4. Explain the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, as described by the author (Ch. 4). What does she say about Michigan’s state ID law (pg. 107)? Assess her discussion of DACA & the roles assumed by immigrant’s children.
5. Discuss political asylum as explained by the author (Ch. 5). What role do attorneys, courts, judges, & religious institutions play in this process? What is an ITIN number (pg. 137)? Be sure to detail the mixed-status families interviewed by the author. Critically examine the author’s consistent advice to Latinx children & her own thoughts about this issue.
6. What are the specific challenges faced by older Latinx Americans & immigrants (Ch. 6)?
Students may use either MLA, APA, or Chicago style citations so long as they are consistent. Remember to include your name, course information, date, and report title. Number your pages in the header or footer. Students are advised to make use of their word processor’s spelling and grammar check tools!!!
